This year SP went as a leopardy cat for Halloween. I made the costume from things we already had at home; the actual clothes were a hand-me-down onsie and matching pants. Trick-or-treating was a blast. SP loved walking around with her pumpkin basket, though she didn't or couldn't hold it up to get the candy. She loved all the other kids who were out, and would yell Booo if she saw something 'scary' or would growl if she saw an animal costume. I love that her tail dragged on the ground behind her.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
And for the record...
The reprogramming of SP has worked, with minimal problems. Hooray! My next project is to start giving her one nap a day instead of two. In all honesty, I thing this will be harder on me than it will be on SP. *sigh*
Hooty the Pumpkin, before and after
What do you think?
I was going to leave the pumpkin alone, but I got 'creative'.
So I shaved the skin off the owl.
I kind of like the lines that were left behind.
So that's it.
Happy Halloween!
Our Pumpkin
We finally finished our Halloween pumpkin tonight.
Do you like the owl? We did it because SP can say owl and hooooo really well.
Reprogramming, continued...
So far the results have been varied. SP goes to sleep without any problems, but her waking up time has been all over the place. Maybe this is to be expected. I'm still hoping that by Sunday Sweet Pea will be sleeping for ten hours, from 9:oo pm to 7:00 am. Or there abouts.
Here are the results from the switch:
- Fri to Sat 9:00 pm to 6:00 am
- Sat - Sun 9:00 pm to 5:15 am
- Sun - Mon 8:00 pm to 6:45 am
- Mon-Tues: 9:00 pm to 6:50 am
Okay, so for the last two mornings SP's trend is looking good. I'm not sure if it's the later bedtime, shorter naps during the day (two 1 to 1&1/2-hour naps instead of two 2-hour naps), or it's just that SP is growing up.
In other news...
We finally set up the fishtank that's been sitting empty in the basement for the last two years after my beloved beta died. Since SP loves to visit the fish department at Meijer when we go to do our weekly grocery shopping, K and I decided it was time she got her own. Yesterday we got two lovely platys, one I can't remember, and one bottom feeder. So far SP has been content to sit and watch the "ish" get acquainted with their new home.
Tonight we will be carving our Halloween pumpkin. I think we'll make it a hooty owl. We'll see.
And that's about it for now. Hope your week is going well.
Daylight Saving is coming to a close...
... and I'm getting ready for it now. I've decided to start deprogramming SP's inner clock. Her inner clock is set for her to wake up at 5:30 am nearly everyday. Not such a huge problem now, but in a week or so 5:30 am will actually be 4:30 am. SP waking up at 4:30 am nearly everyday will be a huge problem. Here's my deprogramming plan:
- start doing her daily routines (meals, naps, bathtime) one hour later than normal
- put her down to sleep at 9:00 pm instead of 8:00 pm
- pray to God that she sleeps through the night and wakes up around 6:30 or 7:00
We did this yesterday, and she went down to sleep no problem. But then, she never has had a problem going to sleep. It's the getting up that's the problem. She slept until 6:00 am this morning. Next week that will be 5 am. I am really, really hoping that by next week her inner clock will be reprogrammed.
Or is this just wishful thinking? What about all you mamas and papas out there? What have your tricks been in past years? What do you plan on doing this year?
Dear Xanga Family of Friends,
I'm sorry I haven't been keeping up with your posts for the last few weeks. I miss all of you and want you to know that it isn't you, it's me. I would like to excuse myself on grounds of extreme business, but that would be a lie. I'm not all that busy. The problem in SweetPea. Now that she is getting older (being 18 months now), she doesn't like me to be doing any of the things I would like to do: sleep, wash dishes, go to the bathroom, make lunch, and of course the worst thing of all- be at the computer.
She has a very nasty habit of grabbing my hands and pulling until I go with her. It's been difficult enough to keep up with reading and commenting on your posts, and just about impossible to write one of my own. I'm hoping that SP will soon grow out of this habit and leave me alone for more than three minutes at a time.And yet, some of you will be thinking, I seem to be on Facebook a whole lot. That, friends, is a whole 'nother story.
I did want to tell you that last night K and I voted via absentee ballots. It is wonderful to have it done and not worry about standing in long lines or having to take SP with me to the polls. So TV ads, internet ads, automated phone ads, and radio ads.... you no longer have one iota of my attention, so you may as well not bother. Now... where's my "I voted" sticker??
That's about it from my little corner of Michigan. I hope you all are well.
Sincerely,
livelaughlovebloom
Words and words
SP is now seventeen months. I've read that by eighteen months, toddlers should be able to say about ten words. Here is what SP can say:
- mama, mommy, and mommy-ah (all refer to me at different times of the day)
- dada (I think this still means her name)
- da (her daddy, K)
- baba (her bottle)
- baba (my mom)
- bah (also her bottle)
- bah (as in what a sheep says)
- bah (ball)
- eye (the body part)
- eye (Hi)
- ot (out, though she doesn't say it very often) (it also sometimes means down)
- eee-ah (eat)
- tickle
- LaLa (her beloved blanket)
I have no idea why she puts the 'ah' sound at the end of some of her words, but that is entirely her doing. So is 'mommy'. I have never referred to myself or others by that title. It's always been 'mama'.
So far that is about fifteen words, and about half are two syllables. I guess she is on track. Whatever; I'm not worried about anything. She's talking ALL the time. I just don't know what she's saying yet.
Serious Love
Did you have a special blanket, doll, or lovey when you were young? Do you remember how much you loved it?
SP received many blankets and afghans as gifts when she was born, most I couldn’t even tell you they are from. But there is one that she loves more than any other. We call this blanket LaLa.
LaLa is pink, smooth satin on one side and soft plush on the other. Contrary to popular belief, she prefers the soft plush side. SP loves to chew on it and rub it between her fingers. When she is tired, SP will rub LaLa under her nose (almost as if she is breathing in its goodness), pull it over her head, and then scrunch it under her cheek before she falls asleep.
LaLa is so much part of SP’s life that it has begun to become personified- LaLa prefers hugs from SP more than from Mama or Daddy. She likes to have sips of water fed to her from SP’s sippy cup. SP likes to give LaLa a turn on the pacifier. LaLa likes pieces of grapes mashed into her. LaLa likes to jump off of SP’s lap when we’re in the car and loves to fall out of the crib in the middle of the night. Oh, LaLa. She can be such a silly blanket!
SP loves this blankie so much that my mom cut it in half so that we would always have a spare on hand just in case. And there is almost always a “just in case situation” waiting to happen...
A few weeks ago SP and I were at the mall with our good friends Sarah and Jack on our usual play date. We were having a good time mall walking when I heard SP’s little voice say softly and with love, “LaLa.” I realized that I hadn’t checked on her in a while, so I peeked my head around the stroller only to find that there wasn’t a LaLa to be found.
Trying not to panic, but failing miserably, we backtracked our steps into the department store we had just come out of. No LaLa. I called K and without even saying hello I cried out, “I lost LaLa!” Both K and Sarah tried to reassure me that LaLa was in the mall someplace and we would find it. Didn’t they know how special LaLa was, how other toddlers were dying to get their little fingers on it?
We backtracked some more, into each store, with me asking if anyone had found a pink blanket. Blank stares and No’s were all I got back. Finally I stopped at the information desk. One last desperate plea for the beloved blankie. One lady shook her head sadly as she looked at SP. The other, with a hopeful ring to her voice, said that she didn’t have it there but she knew where it was. Holding myself back from grabbing her by her polyester lapels and shaking the information out of her, I waited for her to say that she had seen it around the corner near the bookstore.
That was enough for me. I took off at furious sprint, Sarah yelling at me to slow down, as her seven-month pregnant body wasn’t about to run through the mall. So we calmly walked toward the bookstore and sure enough, there was LaLa on the ledge of one the huge planters that are in the middle of the mall.
As we walked closer I could hear SP cry in her little soft voice, “LaLa” and watched her clap as her beloved blankie came into her view. She took it from my hands, rubbed it under her nose, pulled it over her head, and scrunched it under her cheek as we continued to walk around the mall.
That is some serious love.
Party Time
Have you heard of houseparty.com? No? Well, check it out. If you like having parties, trying out new items, and getting some things for free... this may be for you. A fiend of mine suggested it to me, so I signed up not really expecting to get chosen to host a party. But... I did! I am hosting a "Get Creative with Canon Scrapbooking Party" party. I've invited ten of my friends and family to come to my house for scrapbooking and food. Not that those two things really go well together, but whatever.
Everyone will be coming over on October 18th for a fun time. We'll use the party pack houseparty.com provides and do a bit of scrapbooking together. And the best thing is... I get to keep the SELPHY CP770 Printer for free! What a sweet deal. I really don't have to spend much of anything for this party. Bonus.
Jefferson Avenue
K and I had a nice lazy day today. After church and then dinner at my parents' house, we took the long way home so that SP could have a long nap. (She isn't sleeping well at night due to three molars that are popping through.) We took Jefferson Avenue for most of the way. We passed factories (some that are currently used and many that are abandoned), Historic Fort Wayne, the Ambassador Bridge and all the construction around it, Joe Louis Arena, and the Detroit Waterfront, and Belle Isle.
Belle Isle is one of my very favorite places in Detroit, mostly because I have so many fond memories of it from my childhood. Knowing that the Detroit Grand Prix is this Labor Day weekend, we took a ride through the island. There were a ton of families and groups there hanging out by the water, having picnics, and getting together for different activities. We noticed that some (not all) roads have been paved, a couple new buildings have been built (bathrooms, I think), and work crews were cleaning up the Grand Prix area. All the Grand Prix stuff was there- grandstands, banners, parking spots, and the race track. We drove the race track, which was pretty cool. I can't imagine going around the curves at 90+ mph.
I'm glad I won't be going there for the actual races. A) I could not care less about racing. B) I like to avoid huge crowds. C) Did I say that I don't really like racing?
Anyway, we spent about 45 minutes driving around looking at stuff. It was a pleasurable and relaxing way to spend our Sunday afternoon. I hope yours was just as nice.
Newburyport and Home Again
It is so nice to be home again and to be sleeping in my own bed, next to K, without SP's toes digging into my ribs. Ahhhhh. Here's what we did on the rest of my vacation:
- Tuesday was indeed a wet morning, but it cleared up nicely. My sister Glo sent K and me back into the city for dinner and a show while she watched SP. (This was the very first time we left SP with anyone.) Anyway, we saw Shear Madness, a comedy murder-mystery where the audience helps to solve the crime. I really enjoyed the show and was not at all sad that we didn't get tickets to the Blue Man Group. Paa-leeze... SP bangs on things all day long.
- We left Woburn and headed to Newburyport to stay with my sister Pat and her family. Since it was a nice day, we once again went to the beach, this time to Plum Island. I have to admit, for SP it just wasn't as nice as Good Harbor Beach. But we did have fun; we all went into the water, took a walk to find shells, built sandcastles, and made an ocean pool for the kiddies. SP once again just had to taste the ocean to see if it was salty. It was.
This was taken at Good Harbor Beach. SP loved swimming in the warm canal water.
Hey, I'm busy in my ocean pool. You can take a picture, but I won't smile.
- Thursday we all walked to downtown Newburyport. Alas, I wasn't feeling good so as soon as my sister Glo came to meet us there, she took me back to Pat's house. I napped and took a shower and felt good as new. Later we all went to dinner to celebrate K's 31st birthday.
This is SP and me before I left downtown Newburypost early.
(It's one of my very favorite pictures of the two of us.)
Here I am between my two sisters, Pat and Glo.
- Friday we got all packed up and headed out at about 9 am. SP took a three-hour nap and woke up refreshed. However, as we got near the Finger Lakes area in New York, she had a melt down. She just couldn't be in that car seat any longer. At all. So we stopped in Waterloo, NY at a Holiday Inn. And that is where most of the money for the whole dang trip was spent.
But it was worth it, I guess. We had a great dinner and then we went swimming and then she went to bed. K and I watched Ocean's Thirteen (I love those movies) before we, too, hit the hay. - Saturday brought us home. The only bad traffic we hit, going to Massachusetts or coming home to Michigan, was at the Blue Water Bridge. It took us about 30 minutes to get across customs because we, of course, were in the slowest lane ever. EVER.
So, we're home now and so very glad we took the trip out there. Next year we may be renting a house in Maine for a couple of weeks with three of my other siblings and their families. We'll see. Until then, we have some great memories of this trip.
Baw-stin
Our 12 hour drive to Boston turned out to be more like 16 hours when you count in dinner, SP throwing up, and two one-hour nap breaks at service centers. But, traffic was good and we didn't have any bad weather, so we are very thankful. Other than having an upset stomach after dinner, SP slept from 10:30 pm to about 6 am. Thank goodness!
-
Saturday afternoon we hit the city with my sister G and my nephew J. We took the Red Line on the META, SP played in the Duck Pond, we took a Swan Boat ride, she sat on all the ducks from the Make Way for Ducklings book, and we ate at Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market Place. In other words, we did all the right touristy things on Saturday!
Oh, how she loved getting on those ducks!
The Duck Pond was just her size. Here she is finding every little leaf.
-
Sunday was a beautiful warm, sunny, breezy day so we headed to Gloucester and Good Harbor Beach. It was perfect. SP is part mermaid, so she had a blast playing in the canal, finding seaweed in the shallow ocean waves, and diving headlong into the water.
-
Monday we went to the Boston Children's Museum with my other sister and her two kids. What a wonderful museum for kids! Everything was interactive and hands-on. I loved it. Museum is hardly the word to describe all that it was. We only got through two floors before SP fell asleep. Maybe next time we'll be able to hit all the floors.
I think she's getting car sick. That's her big cousin O driving.
And here they are grooving to the music and floor lights.
-
Today is a very wet, gloomy day. I think it's a great day to take it easy. Nap time, anyone??
We are taking a car trip to Boston and Newburyport, MA to visit two of my sisters and their families. While I'm really excited to be going, I cannot help but pray to anyone, anything, and everything that will listen that SP sleeps for at least 10 of the 12 hours it will take us. Light a candle, send good vibes, prescribe some meds... anything you think will help. We're leaving around 5 or 6 pm tomorrow.
Oh, and I don't have one thing packed.
Any suggestions about what we (on a small budget) should do? We will be in the city at least twice, I should think.
Flower Girl
My niece got married yesterday and SP was one of the flower girls, along with my 3-year old niece O.
My mom made the dresses for all the girls. And she made SP's and O's dollies matching dresses, too.
It went really well, flower girl-wise. O held the ringbearer's hand; as they started down the aisle, I told SP to go and catch them. So she ran down the aisle! It was great.
We tried the same procedure for the walk back down after the service. Only this time SP got halfway down, dropped her matching blankie, and ran back to me instead of to K. I think it made the whole wedding!
edited to add pictures
Here she is looking at herself with her headband on. This is before the ceremony. It doesn't look like it, but she really liked having it on. At least for a while.
Here she is walking halfway back, right before she turned around and came back to me.
Here is the wedding party. That's about as good a picture she took then.
So much has been going on these past few weeks, it's been hard to keep up writing here.
Not to mention my addiction to Scrabulous on Facebook, but seeing as the makers (or is it Facebook?) are being sued by Hasbro for putting a Scrabble-like game up, it has been shut down for now. Thus, my addiction is taking a bit of a break. Now instead of being beaten at that, my ass is being fully and truly kicked at Scramble by shortandsnarky. Out of one frying pan into another, I suppose.
July has been full, especially the weekends. Here's a bit of what's been going on:
- We had our eyes checked at the beginning of the month. Can you believe that my sunglasses have just gotten in yesterday?? Unbelievable!
- SP had her 15 month check-up and was declared as healthy as can be.
- My nephew's wedding was on the 12th. It was really nice; the service was at the gorgeous church of St. Anne's in Detroit. The reception was a fabulous party, and we were sorry to leave so early.
- Our first camping trip with SP was last weekend. It went remarkably well, I am pleased to note. SP played in the water; being part mermaid this isn't surprising. She loved playing on the shoreline and getting splashed by the waves. She tasted every rock she picked up. We found a lot of petoskey stones and fossils. She took naps during the day and slept at night. What more could I ask? Even though we brought the camera, we didn't take any pictures. Next time, I promise.
- My niece's wedding shower was Sunday, after we came home from camping. We played the same silly shower games and ate great food. SP practiced holding hands and walking with her older cousin, both are flower girls. Whether SP actually walks down the aisle at the actual wedding is another question all together, but they did look cute.
- Tuesday the three of us met some of my family at the Toledo Zoo. It was sunny and hot, but we all had a great time.
- Tuesday evening I had a 'Ladies' Night Out' with my friend SR. We were supposed to go out with another friend of ours, but once again, that friend flaked out on us. Whatever... we had a nice dinner and had fun walking around the Village in Grosse Pointe. As SR is a good six months pregnant, there wasn't a whole lot she really wanted to do.
- Today we are meeting some of my family at a metropark when K gets home (early) from work. They have a new aquatic park with a play area for babies/toddlers. It should be a fun time.
Okay, SP isn't taking her morning nap like she should. (Did I mention that one of her molars came in sometime last week? I first saw it Sunday.) So I shall go deal with her, get stuff ready for the park, and maybe even get myself cleaned up.
Happy Thursday!
Okay, this is probably pretty boring stuff for those of you without kids and those whose kids are grown up. Sorry about that.
SP had her 15-month check up on Friday. She is in the 75 percentile for height, but only a measly 12 percent for weight. The doctor is happy with her overall health, and so am I.
It’s no wonder SP is so thin: she is always on the go- from the moment she wakes to the moment she sleeps, she just doesn't stop. She is back to a regular sleep schedule, once again. While I am enjoying this time, I take it with a grain of salt as it won’t stay regular for long. Something will interrupt it
- teething, congestion, growth spurt, traveling, whatever. I did ask the ped how much sleep she should be getting and was happy to hear that 10 hours at night and 2 or 3 hours in the day is common for her age. And that is pretty much what Sweet Pea is doing. And it's glorious right now that she is sleeping for ten straight hours, even if she does start the day by waking up at 6 am. It could be much worse.I am also happy that she doesn’t have to drink so much milk anymore. We had been giving her 24-32 ounces a day, but now that she’s eating a wider variety of solids, she only has to have 16-24 ounces. Hooray!
I’ve already cut out two bottles, now giving her an eight ounce in the morning, letting her have more (6-8 ounces) in her sippy straw cup throughout the day, and then one more 6 ounce bottle at night. I’ll be slowly getting rid of the bottles all together, but getting rid of the two is a start.Other than that, we’ve been having fun taking walks and playing in the kiddie pool & sprinkler. With weather like this, it’s the best thing to be doing on these lazy summer days.
